John James Audubon's The Birds of America was printed between 1827 and 1838,  and it contains 435 life-size watercolors of North American birds, all reproduced from hand-engraved plates. A seminal work, it is considered the benchmark of wildlife illustration. Often cited as “the most expensive book of all time,” only 120 known intact copies exist.
